Many people get nervous about going to or being in a wedding and it can be very difficult to deal with on top of all the other stressors that are added into the mix. One thing that many people end up stressing over is having to give a toast and what to say to the guests at the wedding. Although each toast should be unique to your individual circumstances there are a few basic tips that will help you to avoid looking embarrassing during your toast and may ease your mind when it comes to deciding what to say or how to do so.

1. Don't drink during or before your toast too much. It is important to remember what you're going to say and to sound coherent while you're speaking to the crowd. There is, of course, nothing wrong with a glass or two of champagne or wine but if you are drunk then you won't sound very good and you may end up saying something that you didn't intend to or forget the words. You also may end up slurring your words during the speech if you drink too much.

2. You need to adhere to and think of the group that you are addressing during your speech. This means that the rating of what you are saying needs to be suitable to all audiences. Don't give stories to the group that are too extreme or sexual since children don't need to be hearing that and some of the elderly individuals may not be comfortable hearing something such as that. Don't feel that you can't tell stories though because I'm sure there are quite a few stories that are appropriate for all audiences about the groom and bride both.

3. Keep any exes out of the picture for both the bride and groom. This is a wedding and it is a celebration of the present and future, not the past. Although they may be well versed and know all the details about exes, it doesn't need to be brought up at the wedding and the rest of the audience may not want to hear this information either. You should keep all of this information in your head only and if it needs to be mentioned, don't do so while having an audience especially at a wedding.

4. Make sure that you keep in mind that you are at a wedding and not a casual bon fire or other family gathering. There is an appropriate level of joking that can be appropriate but there are limits and make sure that these boundaries are not crossed during the toast.

5. Keep things very simple and short. You may have a lot to say, especially if you've known either the bride or groom for years, but an audience isn't always going to want to listen to someone talk for a long period of time especially after sitting through a ceremony.

There is no need to stress about having to give a wedding toast if you follow a few of these simple steps.
