Personal Trainers – What You Should Look For And Expect When Hiring One

Using a personal trainer to help you achieve your fitness goals used to be the sole reserve of film stars, pop stars and professional athletes but in recent years there has been an explosion of affordable personal trainers gaining contracts to work out of local gyms and to train people such as you and I who may need motivating or who may have just reached a plateau with there training. So what should you look for in a personal trainer and how can you get hold of a good one who will take you forward and not just take your money?

Before you look for or book yourself a session with a personal trainer you should try to understand exactly what it is that a personal trainer will do for you and what they will expect back from you in turn. A personal trainer is someone who is qualified in the skills of training and exercise and should have a fairly decent understanding of the human body and of nutrition and diet. Having a great training plan is nothing if you have not got the diet to go along with it.

A personal trainer is someone who should be able to advise you of how to best execute an exercise plan to help you achieve your weight loss or fitness goals as well as be able to motivate you to push yourself that little bit harder than you otherwise may have done. Before you book your personal trainer try to seek out some of their clients if they have any at the gym that you go to as they may be able to give you some valuable advise as to whether they are competent or not.

If you are not a member of a gym but would like to use the services of a personal trainer the best way to find one is to visit local gyms and ask the staff there if they know of any good personal trainers. Many of the staff at local gyms often also work as personal trainers to supplement their income and as long as they are prepared to work at your home you should be OK.
If you are still struggling to find a personal trainer that suits you then you always have the option of asking friends who may visit a different gym to the ones that you have visited and ask them to make inquires for you. Another good way to find a good personal trainer is to find a local college that runs training courses for personal trainers, here you should be able to not only get the numbers of students who are currently training but also of students that may have finished their training over the past couple of years.
When you find your personal trainer you should make it very clear to them exactly what it is that you are looking to achieve from your training and how often you intend training and using their services. The last thing that you want if you are looking to increase your fitness levels slightly and lose a little weight is an ex army sergeant major who sends you out for a twenty mile run. The personal trainer should be flexible around your plan and not the other way around, their job is to ensure that you hit your personal goals and they should do this by motivation and by sharing their knowledge with you.
You may find that after a period of time you have improved so much that you are ready to take the next step and push yourself a little harder, this should always be your choice and your personal trainer should help you work towards any goal that you set yourself.
