Cape Town is alive with thousands of activities and all it takes is a nudge in the right direction to get started on any one of them. Below, we have some of the best and most exciting pastimes one can partake in during a stay in the glorious province of the Western Cape. Enjoy your internship in Cape Town!
• Hiking on the mountain.
Do you see that massive mountain, the one with the flat top? We like to call that Table Mountain, not because you can eat off it (which you can, if you pack a picnic lunch), but because it has a flat stratum from millions of years of erosion and windy conditions. As a new-born Capetonian, your first step should be, predictably, up the mountain. You internship abroad simply is not complete without this particular hike! Table Mountain is part of the Table Mountain National Park, which stretches from Cape Town to the end of Cape Point, another gorgeous destination you must visit. So either hike to the top and bottom, or take a trip up in the world-famous revolving cable car. Either way, you will see Cape Town in its full glory, just as it looks when you zoom out on Google earth.
• Shopping in the City
Cape Town is a true shopper’s paradise. Cliché I know, but it is! We have all the shops a young intern in Cape Town could wish for. Top international fashion houses and awesome gadget stores can be found at the V&A Waterfront (near Sea point/Green Point) and at Canal Walk (Milnerton side). The great thing about these shopping centres is that most of them are located close to Cape Town’s corporate areas – allowing you to participate in a spot of shopping close to your work. Flats and businesses have sprung up around these behemoths, enabling much in the way of job creation and shopping opportunities for you. Search Cape Town and you will find many more tinier shopping centres, each one with their own distinctive charm.
• Amble down Long Street
Whether it be clubbing, eating, or finding your soul mate for the evening, long street is the perfect area in which to experience the multi-cultured thrills of the Cape. As your internship in Cape Town grows more challenging, relaxation becomes an important part of your social calendar. Long Street has clubs (Joburg’s, Fiction, Neighbourhood, Chrome, and the Waiting Room) and Long Street has restaurants (Long Street Café, Mojitos, Royal and more) and Long Street has the hottest collection of men and women this side of the equator. On warm summer nights the skirts are short and the shirts are tight, plus the alcohol is relatively cheap. Begin your journey in Cape Town with a trip down Long Street.
• Life’s a beach
If you lived in the Southern Hemisphere, you would also take advantage of the persistent beach weather. Camps Bay, Llandudno, Muizenberg, Fish hoek, Boulders Beach, Clifton and many more exotic locales make up the collection of the Capes most amazing beaches. No other internship aboard will allow you to experience as many fantastic beaches Cape Town (unless they provide interning opportunities in Costa Rica). Bring your sunscreen and a large towel, plus a Frisbee for fun.
